Upper Juniors

Welcome to the Junior’s Class Page!

We have a mixed age class with pupils from Year 3 to Year 6, who are taught by Miss Duxbury and Mrs Roberts.

History- Ancient Egypt

This half term the children will be taking a step back in time to discover what life was like in Ancient Egypt! They will begin by reaching and finding facts about the pyramids, which act as tombs for the Pharos and people of significant importance. They will then learn about the challenges of daily life in ancient Egypt, as many had to work incredibly hard. They will derive historically valid questions about the past and compare similarities and differences to today. Then they will move on to explore the mummification process, and why the Egyptians believed it would help the deceased in their travels in the afterlife, which links to the importance of Pharos being decorated in their tombs and to create a death mask. We’ll look at how the ancient Egyptians used hieroglyphics to write and to decipher messages written in hieroglyphics and also create our own secret messages before seeing if our friends can work out what we’ve said!

Science

LKS2: Plants

In this unit children will explore what plants need to grow well. They will compare how plants grow in different soils and explore how fertilisers can be used to improve growth. Children will investigate the amount of water needed to help a leafy pot plant grow well. They will also investigate how space affects plant growth by comparing how well grass seeds grow with more or less space. They will use what they have learned to grow a mystery plant from seed. Children will use the results from their investigations to produce a helpful hints and tips card to describe what helps plants grow better.

UKS2: Earth and space

In this unit pupils will describe the movement of Earth, and other planets, relative to the Sun in our Solar System. They will describe the movement of the Moon relative to Earth and describe the Sun, Earth and the Moon as approximately spherical bodies. Pupils will use the idea of Earth’s rotation to explain day and night and the apparent movement of the Sun across the sky. They will also have the opportunity to find out about how ideas about the solar system have developed and changed over time.

Working Scientifically, children will have the opportunity to plan an enquiry using a shadow stick and look at changes over time. They will take accurate measurements of the shadows formed, decide how to record them and present their findings. They will also identify scientific evidence that has been used to support or refute changing ideas about the Solar System.

Homework

Children will receive English and Maths homework every Friday, this is to be completed for the following Monday. Homework is always based on work children have been doing in school and set to suit their abilities. If something is sent home that a pupil needs more help with, please inform us on the Monday morning so we can do this.

Spellings and Times Tables

Spellings and Times Tables are set on Friday and the children have their test on the following Friday. Children write their spellings in their book and have time to practise in school during the week. They are given times table sheets (with times tables up to 12×) at the beginning of the year. They are to use this to practise at home. While children are given time to practise in school, it is important they take the time to practise at home too.

Year group pictures:

The Houses of Parliament

KS2 went on a school trip to the houses of Parliament, where they ere shown around the houses of commons and Lords and got to watch debates happen. They learnt about the history of the Houses of Parliament and had a super day.

The Spiderwick Chronicles

The children have read and acted out scenes from The Spiderwick Chronicles. They've developed their use of inference looking at character thought and feelings and made sensible predicitions about what they thought would happen in the book.

Bonfire and Firework safety

The police paid us a visit to explain the importance of bonfire and firework safety. We looked at the different laws and how to keep ourselves safe! Especially if using sparklers.

Structures

LKS2 looked at creating a structure with strengthened frames, using diagonal struts. They then made this into a set before adding a character to the back who would move using a lever.

UKS2 made a structure and then used cams and levers to add a character so it would move.

Mellow Yellow Day

Our class looked at the importance of mental health and taking time to calm down, remain positive and take time to look after ourselves, as well as others.
